Cycle Time and Machine Hourly Rates
Cycle time is the repeat machining time per part. Machine hourly rate reflects equipment cost, labor, facility overhead, maintenance, software, tooling, and margin.
What lengthens cycle time?
Hard materials, small cutters, deep cavities, tight surface finish, many tool changes, and conservative feeds can all increase cycle time.
Machine rate differences
A simple mill, mill-turn center, Swiss lathe, wire EDM, and 5-axis machining center may have very different hourly rates. The right machine depends on geometry and production volume.
Practical takeaway
Reducing unnecessary machining time often lowers cost more than negotiating material price. Good DFM can shorten the path to a lower quote.
