Setup Time and Fixturing Cost

Setup time includes the work required before repeatable production begins. It may involve programming, tool loading, workholding, probing, dry runs, and first-part checks.

Why setup affects small batches

If setup takes several hours, a single prototype absorbs all that cost. A 50-piece batch spreads the same work over more parts.

Fixturing choices

Simple vise work is usually cheaper than custom fixtures. Complex parts may need soft jaws, vacuum fixtures, tombstones, or dedicated inspection setups.

Reduce setup burden

Design parts with stable datums, accessible features, and fewer orientations. Clear drawings reduce uncertainty and rework.
